The New Suit: Sharp Tailoring, Skirt Suits and '80s Power
The slouch is out. Fitted jackets, skirt suits and sculpted shoulders are back.

After seasons of slouchy, oversized tailoring, the suit has sharpened up. Fitted double-breasted jackets, leaner trousers, skirt suits and sculpted shoulders all came back for Autumn/Winter 2026. Call it a new kind of power dressing: polished and structured, with plenty of personality in the styling.
What the runways showed
Harper's Bazaar UK reports that the "easy slouch of spring" has been replaced by something much sharper. Jackets were largely double-breasted and fitted at Louis Vuitton, Celine, Victoria Beckham and Hermès, and trouser legs were leaner. At Tom Ford, Haider Ackermann layered pinstripe suits over unbuttoned polka-dot shirts.
Coveteur focused on the skirt suit, which it says "took over the runway". Examples include Matthieu Blazy's take on the house silhouette at Chanel, a purple lapel-less skirt suit at Jil Sander, deconstructed tailoring at Ferragamo and suede skirt suits in poppy red and ecru at Tom Ford. Trendalytics describes nods to office wear from the 1950s to the 1980s, including skirt suits, high-waisted trousers and maxi coats.
British Vogue sees a "new-era ladylike", with Jonathan Anderson's versions of the historic Dior Bar jacket styled with slouchy denim, and Chanel's bouclé cut into boxier, easier shapes. In Copenhagen, Vogue noted designers playing with exposed shoulder pads and peplums.
The '80s connection
Pinterest saw this coming. Its Pinterest Predicts 2026 report included a trend called "Glamoratti": a return of 1980s decadence with tailored suits with sculpted shoulders, funnel necks and chunkier gold jewellery. In that report, Pinterest listed growth for related terms on its platform, such as "80s luxury" (+225%) and "chunky belt" (+65%).
How to wear it
- Break up the suit: wear a fitted blazer with jeans, the way British Vogue describes the Dior Bar jacket with slouchy denim.
- Try a skirt suit: a matching jacket and knee-length or midi skirt, worn with boots or loafers, is the season's most talked-about tailoring shape.
- Pinstripes: a classic menswear pinstripe works for anyone. Soften it with a printed shirt or a fine knit.
- Mind the shoulder: a defined or slightly padded shoulder gives the '80s feel. Pair it with a slimmer trouser to keep the balance.
- Add a belt: cinching a blazer at the waist adds shape and nods to the Glamoratti mood.
For menswear, too
Sharper suiting isn't only a womenswear story: several of the houses named above also show menswear, and the leaner, double-breasted shapes translate directly. A fitted double-breasted jacket, straight trousers and a fine-gauge roll-neck is a simple, modern alternative to the classic shirt and tie.
Shopping tip
Tailoring is where fit matters most. A secondhand or vintage blazer from the late 1980s or 1990s can be a great find for this trend, and a tailor can take in the waist or shorten the sleeves for a small cost compared to a new suit.
